Pardew hails Newcastle character after massive Chelsea win

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has praised his side after their fighting 2-1 win over league leaders Chelsea on Saturday.

The Magpies toiled hard at St James' to overcome the Blues who were unbeaten in 14 Premier League matches prior and Pardew was proud of how his players held on at the end.

"That was about character (and) discipline against the best team in probably Europe at the moment," he said on BT Sport 1.

"At the start of the game I felt we stood off them a little bit and (Eden) Hazard was getting a lot of joy but we stuck at it and we were always a threat on the break."

Papiss Cisse scored a double in the 57th and 78th minutes before Steven Taylor was sent off for a second yellow card in the 81st minute.

That set up a nervy end for the Toon and it was made even more shaky when Didier Drogba pulled one back for the Blues with seven minutes remaining but they held on for their third straight home win over the west London club and their sixth in their past eight in the league.
