Palace chief Parish: Pulis is Coppell-esque

Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish feels the appointment of Tony Pulis will have rivals concerned.

Parish likens the former Stoke City manager to Eagles legend Steve Coppell.

"[Co-chairman] Steve Browett and I have always imagined we would have a manager for nine years - we wanted a Coppell-esque situation," Parish told the London Evening Standard. "Of course that's the idea with Tony. We are very happy with him and what he did at Stoke. If he replicated 50 or 60 per cent of what he did there we would be very happy.

"In terms of the clubs around us, I would like to think Tony is the manager they would least have liked us to get.

"Tony would definitely have been one of their lowest choices and that was an easy yardstick to put it against. You don't get an easy game against one of his teams.

Battle: Pulis became the fourth manager Parish has appointed "The criticism just strengthens my resolve. If you do something you will make mistakes and if you make mistakes it's a public game so people will criticise you. I've learnt a lot in three years and I will continue to learn. If you make an appointment too quickly people will say, 'Oh, they did it ever so quick'. What is the appropriate time to take? I never knew there was an appropriate time to appoint a manager.

"We looked at every option and structure available as it was the right time to do that. I don't think we are ready to go for a completely continental structure, where the manager just gets given players and is told, 'That's your right-back for the season'.

"Tony will be involved in every facet of the decisions of the club. It will be up to him what players he does and doesn't have."
