Oldham progress in FA Cup at expense of Liverpool

Oldham Athletic have upset Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The League One Latics saluted 3-2 at Boundary Park today to progress to the fifth round, eliminating their Premier League opponents in the process.

Matt Smith gave Oldham a third-minute lead when he used his towering frame to edge out Sebastian Coates and head home past Brad Jones before Luis Suarez made it 1-1 in the 17th minute.

The Uruguayan ace made a determined run from midfield before getting a lucky bounce when he attempted to pass with the deflection falling to him to hammer past Dean Bouzanis in goal for the Latics.

A howler from Reds keeper Jones just before half-time allowed Smith to score his second and then Oldham went two goals ahead early in the second half when Manchester City loanee Reece Wabara hit the back of the net with a header of his own.

Joe Allen gave Liverpool some hope with ten minutes remaining when he scored with a deflected shot but the damage had been done as Oldham reached the fifth round for the first time in 19 years.
