Newcastle United midfielder Gabriel Obertan, who was believed to be on the transfer list, is now looking forward to a fresh start at St James' Park.

The former Manchester United player provided an assist in the season-opening 2-2 draw with Southampton on Saturday and expects to build upon his performance for the rest of the season

"(McClaren) told me I'd have a fresh start, and that's what I expected with new staff coming with fresh eyes and a new vision for the team," said Obertan.

"It's a really good start for me, and I'm really enthusiastic for the rest of the season."

The Frenchman has managed to make only 53 league appearances for the Magpies since his move in 2011.
