Sunderland assistant coach Charlie Oatway is convinced their season will turn with Jermain Defoe now in attack.
Defoe is expected to start against Fulham on Saturday, and is desperate to make his home debut in the FA Cup fourth round tie.
Oatway said: "Defoe will probably play. He looks good in training and although he had an injury before he came here, he is ticking over nicely.
"When you sign someone like Jermain, because he is a name, it gives everyone a lift. Everyone wants to impress him in training and show him what they have got. He gives everyone a little bit of oomph in their game. It has been very well received.
"There are no guarantees in football, but the kid has a fantastic record in scoring goals. You have to get excited about what he could do here - and I am sure the fans are delighted to have him on board.
"The way he has conducted himself here and been even more of a blessing for me.
"He has been a top gentleman, and just wants to play and train."
