NZ's Smith fires past Oman's Al-Habsi but Wigan get better of Ipswich

New Zealand national team defender Tommy Smith was on target for Ipswich Town but could not guide the team to victory over Wigan Athletic in the Championship on the weekend.

The 23-year old All whites ace was on hand to divert Cole Skuse's header past Oman international Ali Al-Habsi in the 19th minute at Portman Road but the Tractor Boys lead for just over two minutes as James McClean responded before Leon Barnett had the Latics ahead just before the break.

McClean added a third in the 77th minute as Uwe Rosler's side came from behind to down Mick McCarthy's Ipswich to move to fifth as their opponents remained ninth.

The goal was Smith's fourth in the league this season and 14th in his Ipswich career.
