New York Red Bull recorded a 3-2 win over DC United in a scintillating contest in front of more than 25,000 fans at Red Bull Arena on Sunday night.
The sell-out crowd witnessed a seesawing affair which saw the visitors take a first minute lead before New York fought their way back to lead 3-1 and then DC score another goal to set up a grandstand finish.
Chris Pontius' goals for DC bookended a double from Red Bulls defender Brandon Barklage and a 55th minute finish from Jan Gunnar Solli but it was the crowd which attracted the interest from Thierry Henry who came off the bench with just over 20 minutes remaining.
"We did need that. Especially at the end, to give us that extra push to make sure we could keep the win.""The fans are outstanding. Sometimes we are so sad when they don't come, but tonight we needed that," he said after the match.
The win allowed New York to climb to second on the Eastern Conference table, equal on points with conference leaders DC but behind with an inferior goal difference.
