Newcastle U21 coach Dawson admits De Bolle halftime blast

Newcastle United's young stars have been challenged by Ben Dawson to show their worth in preseason.

The Magpies Under-21s lost 2-0 to Carlisle United in a friendly game on Saturday through two Ryan Edmondson goals.

However, Dawson was impressed with the likes of Lucas De Bolle, Amadou Diallo and Max Thompson in the defeat.

He told Chronicle Live: “I think with all of our lads it's a big year. In football, your time in the game goes quick.

“Whether you've got a year on your contract, three years, five years, whatever, the seasons go quickly and you have to take every opportunity you are given to be memorable.

“That's one of the challenges we spoke to Lucas (De Bolle) about yesterday.

“We said he needs to be more memorable and he got told that in no uncertain terms at half-time today. He reacted brilliantly and I thought he was excellent in the second-half compared to the first.

“The challenge for him, and for all of the lads, is to do that not just on a gameday, but to do it Monday to Friday in training."
