Newcastle, Southampton chasing Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk

Newcastle United and Southampton are interested in Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Evening Chronicle says Newcastle have watched the player, but they are among a number of clubs to do so.

Southampton are leading the chase for a 22-year-old who is a big favourite of Saints new manager, Ronald Koeman, with La Liga outfit Sevilla another interested party.

Van Dijk's agent, Henk-Maarten Chin, insisted recently that his player was bound for the Premier League.

Chin said: "Many English clubs are interested in him - the absolute top clubs. They watch him and are very keen.

"There has been no official approaches for Virgil yet, but that will come. There's certainly far more interest in him than we could have dreamed of.

"I expect something will happen for him this summer - the intention would be for him to earn a top transfer."
