Newcastle United and Birmingham City are battling for Levante's Brazilian defender Alvaro.
The 28-year-old, who holds a Spanish passport, was originally targeted by Alex McLeish but now has his heart set on a switch to St James' Park.
Toon boss Kevin Keegan will offer £1.5million to Alvaro's club, La Liga strugglers Levante, who are desperate for cash.
Alvaro said: "It's incredible - on the same day two English clubs are fighting over me.
"Levante have the final say but going to Newcastle is perfect. To play in the Premier League will be sensational."
