Newcastle's St Johnstone loanee Abeid: Celtic's Forster can become England no.1

St Johnstone midfielder Mehdi Abeid is of the belief that Fraser Forster can take the mantle as England's number one goalkeeper.

Abeid, who is on loan from Newcastle United, knows Forster well from their time together in England's Northeast and is confident he will become a top player for the Three Lions after seeing him take the reins at Celtic.

"I know Fraser Forster really well. I played with him last pre-season. We were together in our summer tour of America and he became a good friend," said Abeid ahead of Tuesday night's league meeting between the two clubs.

"It was a good pre-season and it was a great chance to get to know Fraser.

"I've always thought he was a good keeper. He's tall, he's strong and has presence.

"I think he's good enough to play for England.

"I was surprised that he didn't get into the Newcastle first team but he's done really well up here.

"I hope he gets even better and becomes England's No1 keeper.

"But tonight I hope he is not celebrating - and that I can score against him. That would be nice. I'm going to try."
