Newcastle's character will take us through - Culina

Newcastle Jets coach Branko Culina believes the character of the players will take the team through the finals campaign.

After a plucky performance against Gold Coast United in their knockout semi-final on Saturday night, the Jets qualified for week 2 of the finals where they will meet Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on March 6 and although Culina admits his team may lack the quality of clubs such as Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory, he is banking on their amount of character to get them through.

"I'm not sure if Sydney and Melbourne are looking over their shoulder yet but if we can get past Wellington they better," Culina said.

"They know we will be awkward. We may lack that little bit of quality but we have a lot of character.

"This was the third time this year we had been written off. No one gave us a chance, except ourselves.

"It is a tremendous trademark this club has. When you have those type of players you never give up."

The A-League finals series takes a break this weekend for the Asian Champions League before kicking on again the following weekend with the match between the Jets and Phoenix as well as the second leg of the major semi-final between Sydney and Melbourne which the Victory lead 2-1 after the first match.
