Steve McClaren has played down suggestions that him being linked with the Newcastle United job led to his Derby County departure.
The 54-year old was sacked by the Rams on Monday after a disappointing end to the Championship season which saw them win just two of their last 13 matches.
McClaren insisted on Monday that he was saddened by the decision but dismissed claims that being a possible candidate for the St James' Park job was the reason for his exit at the iPro Stadium.
"I'm very disappointed with the decision, especially as I have on three occasions reiterated my commitment to Derby County Football Club," he said.
"The club means a huge amount to me, and I was not looking to leave. While we were all unhappy with the way the season ended, I still believe real progress was being made.
"I do not believe or accept that rumours linking me to the Newcastle United job were a factor in the team's performances this year, as had been alleged."
