Newcastle United are chasing FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong.
The Sunday Mirror says any approach for the Dutchman will not stop moves for top target Modibo Maiga in the January window.
Toon owner Mike Ashley is determined there will be no repeat of the August transfer window let-down when Newcastle failed to land any of the Andy Carroll replacements.
Toon have made regular checks on FC Twente hotshot de Jong. The Magpies top brass are close to sealing a £6million deal with French outfit Sochaux for the 23-year Mali international Maiga to sign on January 2.
But Newcastle still retain their interest in 21-year-old de Jong- also regularly watched by Liverpool.
