Newcastle United attempted to close a deal for Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho last weekend.
The Evening Chronicle says United attempted to land Cissokho over the weekend with Toon officials in the south of France hoping to clinch the deal.
However, United are trying to keep as many doors ajar as possible ahead of the deadline including PSV Eindhoven's Erik Pieters - who helped PSV Eindhoven thrash Excelsior 6-1 yesterday.
