Newcastle midfielder Hayden charged by FA for improper conduct

Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden has been charged by the FA for improper conduct.

Hayden has been charged with 'attacking the integrity of a match official' by the Football Association after he appeared to label referee David Coote as Chelsea's '12th man', reports the Daily Mail.

Hayden is currently recovering from knee surgery but, following his club's 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge this month, he tweeted: 'Some performance from the boys against 12 men today. Proud to be associated with the club is an understatement.'

Coote had failed to award Newcastle a penalty at 0-0 when Trevoh Chalobah pulled the shirt of Jacob Murphy, a decision that was later criticised by United boss Eddie Howe.

The referee also booked eventual match-winner Kai Havertz rather than issue a red card after his elbow caught defender Dan Burn on the temple.

Hayden must now provide the FA with a response to his comments. An FA spokesperson said: "It is alleged that the midfielder's comments on social media after the game constitute improper conduct as they attack the integrity of the match official and/or are personally offensive and/or bring the game into disrepute.

"Isaac Hayden has until Wednesday 23 March 2022 to provide a response."
