Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul insists he meant no insult when caught by cameras congratulating Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe at halftime for his wonder goal on Sunday. The Dutchman says it was a sporting gesture and suggested he was telling Defoe he was lucky.
Speaking after the game to Sky, Krul said: "What I actually told him I probably can't repeat on TV. It was just a nice gesture.
"It was a fantastic goal, everybody has to accept that. I actually thought (what I said) was more in the region of what a lucky guy he is.
"I have been here 10 years at the his club and I am as hurt as anybody else.
"Whoever wants to put negatives like that on me is not justified."
And when pressed on whether he was hurting Krul added: "I am a Geordie. I've been here 10 years so I am going home with a lot of pain in my heart.
"To see those fans having to travel back to Newcastle without a win hurts me as much as them."
