Newcastle Jets' Wheelhouse receives two-match ban

Newcastle Jets midfielder Jobe Wheelhouse will serve a two-match ban after receiving a straight red card on Wednesday night.

The hard-tackling Wheelhouse was shown the card by referee Peter Green in the 8th minute of the 2-0 away win over Melbourne Heart after clashing with left-back Aziz Behich.

The independent Match Review Panel found that Wheelhouse had committed an offence, namely 'Assault on a Player (eg Violent Conduct when not challenging for the ball)' and has proposed a sanction of two (2) matches which is the minimum for this offence under the Hyundai A-League Disciplinary Regulations.

The Newcastle Jets have until 12.00pm today to accept the proposed sanction or refer the matter to a hearing by the FFA Disciplinary Committee.

And by the sounds of coach Branko Culina's comments, the club will certainly be appealing.

"I will be asking the club to do everything we can about the send-off but also the length of the suspension," he said last night.

And one player told the Newcastle Herald it was a jocular decision.

"It's a joke. Behich took a massive dive," the unnamed player said.

"Jobe never punched him, he pushed him with an open hand.

"The FFA are supposed to be cracking down on diving, yet that was a clear dive and they've turned a blind eye to it."
