Newcastle Jets' marquee signing Culina out for season

Jason Culina is set to spend the entire 2011/12 A-League season on the sidelines because he needs another operation on his knee.

The Australian international midfielder joined the Newcastle Jets from Gold Coast United as a marquee signing in the off-season but will not play for his new club this term after he confirmed his decision to have the surgery on the knee he injured playing for the Socceroos at the Asian Cup back in January.

"In consultation with the Club, I have made this decision to have the operation as soon as possible to ensure I will be fit and ready for the 2012-13 season," Culina said.

"Whilst I feel frustrated to sit out the season I have nothing but confidence in how the team are playing and the young talent coming through will ensure the Jets have a great season.

"I am really loving my time in Newcastle and thank all those that have sent me best wishes to get back on the paddock and to my team-mates who will do Newcastle proud this year."
