Newcastle in goalkeeper crisis ahead of Sunderland derby

Newcastle United will be forced to assess their goalkeeping situation ahead of this weekend's Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland.

The Magpies take on their arch enemies at St James' Park on Sunday without their top two keepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot who are currently sidelined with ankle and thigh injuries respectively.

In Wednesday night's disappointing 4-0 Capital One Cup quarter-final defeat at Tottenham, 21-year old gloveman Jak Alnwick fell awkwardly on his shoulder which has put him in doubt for the visit of the Black Cats and placed the Toon in a predicament according to manager Alan Pardew.

"He has an injury to his shoulder so we're going to have to see," Pardew said after the loss in north London.

"It is something we might have to look at tomorrow because there is no way that a 17-year-old [Freddie Woodman] - that's our fourth-choice - should be allowed to go in goal at this level.

"We will perhaps talk to the Premier League tomorrow about Jak's situation."
