Newcastle defender Dan Burn accepts England call unlikely

Newcastle defender Dan Burn accepts his hopes of being capped for England are fast diminishing.

The 30-year-old has been consistently overlooked by Gareth Southgate in recent years despite impressing both at Brighton and on Tyneside.

"It's every kid's dream to play for their country," Burn told Sky Sports. "I think now that I haven't made it [in Southgate's squad] with the way that I've been playing it's probably not going to happen.

"But I think there are a lot of good centre-halves in this league who are knocking on that door and want to be on the plane to the World Cup. I think the lads that are in there at the moment are very, very good centre-halves. As a nation we've got some pretty good defenders.

"It's a game of opinions and the only opinion that matters at the moment is Gareth's. So I am happy playing for Newcastle and I want to put in some really good performances and if that gets me an England call-up it does and if it doesn't, it doesn't."
