Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear is determined to prise Madjid Bougherra away from Rangers.

The Daily Record says the Algerian international is wanted by Newcastle but Walter Smith doesn't want to sell one of his mainstays.

However, a bid in the region of £5million could test Rangers' resolve as it would double their money on a player bought just last summer.

Bougherra has settled in well at Ibrox following his £2.5m move from Charlton and is also attracting interest from French big guns Marseille.
