Newcastle chief Wise targets Burnley's Lafferty

Newcastle United executive chief Dennis Wise is trying to setup a deal for Burnley centre-forward Kyle Lafferty.

Lafferty is valued at £4million, a price that put off both Celtic and Rangers in the last window. But now the Toon are on his trail. The big hit-man, who plays on the left wing but is seen as a central striker for the future, fits the Newcastle bill as Wise looks for young blood to give Keegan's team fresh legs and life.

Lafferty - back from a four-game club ban - was watched by Toon spies when he played for Northern Ireland last week and they will continue to monitor him over the coming months, says the People.

The player is settled at Turf Moor despite lots of interest.

But as long as Burnley do not gain promotion to the Premier League, and they are pushing hard for a play-off spot, there will be a summer auction for him - and Newcastle lead the race.
