Newcastle United are pushing to bring in a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

The Magpies face the prospect of losing summer signing Sandro Tonali for many months - at the very least.

With the Italian being investigated for allegedly betting on his own team's games when an AC Milan player, Newcastle are seeking cover in that position.

Per the Northern Echo, Newcastle are eyeing a January move for Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

The defensive anchorman has not featured regularly for City since signing for the club nearly 18 months ago.

But he may now get the chance to play regularly, if Newcastle can agree a fee with City.
