Newcastle United are challenging Barcelona for Juan Mata.

The United midfielder is out of contract this summer, as it is unclear if he will be offered a new deal at Old Trafford.

According to The Sun, Newcastle and Rafa Benitez are emerging as contenders for Mata, as they could offer him a starting spot in the Premier League.

Barcelona also want the Spanish playmaker, but it is understood that it would be a reserve role where he only plays games where the first team is rested.

Mata still has a lot to figure out regarding his future, as it is possible he will stay at United on a one or two year contract.
