Newcastle United have cancelled their end-of-season awards dinner.

The Magpies were set to celebrate their season next week with a function to be attended by the entire playing list, head coach John Carver and guests from main sponsors such as Wonga and Puma.

But the north east club have decided not to hold the event as they continue to battle relegation, suggesting they have nothing to rejoice about.

A spokeswoman said: "The club would like to extend its apologies for any inconvenience caused to those businesses who have purchased tables to support the event but we hope that you can appreciate our decision has not been taken lightly."
