New Liverpool signing Sahin: I was Istanbul for Champions League triumph!

New Liverpool signing Nuri Sahin admits he was in the stadium for their famous Champions League triumph over AC Milan.

Back in May 2005, Sahin was the shining light in the Turkey side which had lifted the European Under-17 title - and he was in the crowd at Istanbul as the Reds celebrated their most incredible victory.

Sahin, at Liverpool on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, said: "We were the Under-17 European champions and were invited to the game by the Turkish FA.

"We were sitting near the Liverpool fans and at half-time they were all crying. I remember seeing one guy calling his family in tears.

"Then Dietmar Hamann came on and the game changed. People around me were saying, 'Maybe, maybe.'

"When it went to 3-2 it was just crazy and even I had goosebumps on my arm. After that I thought Liverpool would win. If you come back like that, you win.

"The football god was with Liverpool when Andriy Shevchenko missed a goal he would score 99 times out of 100.

"When I saw Steven Gerrard with the Champions League trophy, I thought, 'I want to win that one day.'

"A comeback like that gives everyone inspiration. We all thought, 'This is real football and this is why we love it'.

"When you think of legendary games, this is the one you think about and I'm happy to say I was there."
