New Flamengo sports chief Sampaoli: I wanted Gabigol at Sevilla

Jorge Sampaoli admits he wanted to sign Flamengo striker Gabigol for Sevilla.

Sampaoli was sacked by Sevilla a fortnight ago and replaced by Jose Luis Mendilibar.

The Argentine, just named Fla sporting director, admits he urged Sevilla chief Monchi to bring the Brazilian to Europe in January.

He recalled: “I faced Gabi when he was at Santos and Atlético Mineiro and we suffered a lot with his goalscoring ability, which we recognised in him.

"Yes, I wanted him at Sevilla but it was not possible. The player, being well, makes us add points.

"In that, basically, he can help me. Win and score points through his effectiveness. We will also try to help him so that he can help us."
