National Youth League enjoys successful opening week

The inaugural A-League National Youth League (NYL) kicked off last week, coinciding with Round 6 of the senior season. In the first NYL match on Friday evening, Melbourne Victory took on Queensland Roar at Green Gully Reserve but went down 2-0 with goals to Josh McVey and Mitch Nichols. Victory regular Steve Pantelidis played in the match in a bid to force himself back into favour with the selectors. In Gosford, also on Friday, the Perth Glory downed home side Central Coast Mariners 1-0 with a goal to Ludovic Boi. The Mariners had some regular first team players on the park including back-up goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne and Greg Owens who managed just over fifteen minutes as he returns from injury. Off-season signing Hayden Doyle and young goalkeeper Tando Velaphi were the most recognizable names in the Glory side. Adelaide United and the Newcastle Jets played out a 0-0 draw whilst Sydney FC had the bye in the seven-team competition.
