Rafael Benitez has joined the growing chorus of people to heap praise on Steven Gerrard.

As the Liverpool captain prepares for his final match at Anfield this weekend, his former manager Benitez spoke glowingly of his ability to get the best out of his teammates through his outstanding leadership.

"Steven has always led by example," Benitez told the Liverpool Echo.

"Thanks to him the other good players that we had were always better."

Benitez, currently with Napoli, spoke of Gerrard's influence on the Liverpool team in their stunning Champions League triumph over AC Milan back in 2005.

"He talks with players and pushes his team-mates on. That night in Istanbul they knew he could make the difference and they were following him," he added.

"With Steven you get commitment, passion, a leader and a player with power, talent and excellent technique when it comes to passing, heading and shooting.

"He is one of the best I've ever worked with."
