Muscat sticks by beset Brazilian striker

Melbourne Victory's imported Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines for an alleged spitting incident. Skipper Kevin Muscat and the club however, are making it known that they are going to back their new star all the way. After receiving a red card for allegedly spitting at Reds defender Robert Cornthwaite, Fabiano must now face the A-League disciplinary committee tonight to try and fight the charge against him. Speaking to the Herald Sun, Muscat made it clear that everybody involved at the Victory was sticking behind Fabiano. He said, "It's disappointing that people have assassinated his character immediately. The most important thing for him and the group is that the players are 100 per cent behind him. "We were there and (saw) exactly what happened, so there's certainly no animosity from the playing group and we'll move on from there regardless of what happens." If found guilty, Fabiano could face up to six weeks abeyance from the game which is a hefty ban in any case but Muscat was determined to be positive irrespective of the outcome. He added, "It's not a nice thing to be accused of. It's something that's happened and, regardless of what happens tomorrow night, we'll move on." The Victory are on the road this weekend to tackle fourth-placed Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night at Bluetongue Stadium and may be without Fabiano as a key striker, although they do have the depth to cover him as Muscat noted. "It's the attitude of trying to get forward and get as much ball to Danny (Allsopp) and Archie (Thompson) and Carlos (Hernandez). "If we keep enough clean sheets, we'll terrorise people, especially at Telstra Dome."
