Moyes proud of Everton after UEFA Cup success

Everton battled to a 3-2 victory over Metalist Kharkiv last night so securing UEFA Cup progress 4-3 on aggregate.

Everton stormed back in the second half after looking on their way out of the competition and manager Dave Moyes was thrilled with their spirit.

Goals from Joleon Lescott, James McFadden and substitute Victor Anichebe saw them claim victory in this first round match.

Moyes said: "I have never mentioned Dinamo Bucharest to the players but it was certainly in my thoughts.

"We wanted to get through but the first round is always difficult and that proved to be the case tonight.

"They were a very good side and we did not play well in the first half.

"I had to change things around. It was a real blow to lose the second goal but we kept going."

Bringing on Anichebe changed the game and Moyes said: "That one worked. It was touch-and-go whether we started with Victor tonight."

McFadden showed his love of European nights with another fine strike. He was, of course, the player who scored Scotland's winner against France in Paris recently.

Moyes said: "I've seen the goal again. It's a really good one. Its one of those nights that when these things land at his feet you think he might score." Moyes added: "It was a real good game. We all wanted to get through, not just for the club in general, but for the supporters.

"They turned up in numbers for the first leg and then tonight certainly ranks up there with the good times I've had at this club."
