Motherwell in talks for Southend fullback Hammell

Motherwell are in discussions with Southend United over signing ex-Fir Park star Stevie Hammell.

It is understood that the 25-year-old's family has failed to settle on the south coast and would jump at the chance to move back to Scotland.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee revealed: "We are trying to do something as regards Stevie and hopefully we can get him back up the road. We are talking to him at the moment while we are also talking to one or two others. I'm looking to get something done."

However, Southend chairman Ron Martin replied: "We have no interest in selling Steve, who is an important part of our side."

Aberdeen too, having already lost Michael Hart and Chris Clark during the window, are said to be interested in the left back.
