MLS players will team up with former USA stars for a special event titled 'Soccer Night in Newtown' to help out the Connecticut community.
On December 14, the Sandy Hook Elementary School experienced a tragedy when 20 children and six adults were shot dead by 20-year old Adam Lanza who later committed suicide.
In a bid to raise the morale of the disaster-stricken community, Houston Dynamo president Chris Canetti has organised the event, in tandem with Quinnipac University head coach Eric Da Costa, which will bring together at least 30 MLS players along with the likes of Alexi Lalas, Eric Wynalda, Cobi Jones and Mia Hamm on January 7.
"The idea started as a clinic, but we would have had to limit the number of kids with a clinic. We ditched the clinic idea and decided on a more interactive night," said Canetti.
"This isn't about signing autographs for fans from Trenton, but rather to put smiles on the faces of kids (and residents) from Newtown who has dealt with a lot lately."
MLS players in attendance will include LA Galaxy stars Landon Donovan and Sean Franklin, New York Red Bull striker Kenny Cooper and Houston Dynamo pair Brad Evans and Brian Ching.
