Milligan allowed to extend Newcastle stay

Mark Milligan is almost certain to have his guest stint further extended to see out the season with the Newcastle Jets. Initially, the Olyroos captain was to have a seven-game stint with the Jets which then was extended to nine to accommodate Jets players being on international duty with the U19 team.

In now seems as though Milligan will play out the season before taking up a one-year deal with the club for the 2009/2010 season.

A potential long-term injury to Noel Spencer has given Milligan an opportunity and although it's not the way he wanted it to happen, he is grateful for any chance given.

"That is what we were hoping for when I signed, not that I wanted anyone to get injured but for a spot to open up," Milligan told The Herald.

"That is always a possibility with small squads.

"It is nice to know that the possibility of seeing out the season is now likely.

"It puts my mind at ease a little as well."
