Michael Owen takes another swipe at Newcastle

Michael Owen has taken another swipe at former club Newcastle United.

While appearing on Jamie Carragher's 'The Greatest Game' podcast, Owen had further revelations around his 2005 transfer saga, that ended with him making a record-breaking £17million move to the Magpies from Real Madrid.

He said, "I said to Tony [Owen's agent] the only way this is going to work and I go to Newcastle is if you get it in the contract that I can move to Liverpool for a certain amount that they are actually willing to pay now in a years time

"So I went to Newcastle with the caveat that I thought I was going back to Liverpool in a year's time.

"I never ever played the game of football for money, but the thing in the contract made it a cracking deal and you can go back to Liverpool after one year.

"Surely this was the best thing to do rather than staying in Madrid, with a world cup at the end of the year.

"It made me think is this move the best of a bad situation.

"This could have been anyone Nottingham Forest, Hull, Birmingham any team, but I wanted to go back to Liverpool end of story, no matter what.

"It just so happened Newcastle put in the bid. I have nothing against any other team I just wanted to go back to my club, and that is why there has been a fall-out since."
