MEX 0 - 1 URU: Mexico and Uruguay through to Round of 16

Uruguay have defeated Mexico 1-0 in Rustenburg but both sides have progressed to the Round of 16.

Group AMexico: 0 Uruguay: 1 (Luis Suarez 43')

Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium - Rustenburg Crowd: 35,000 Referee: Viktor Kassai (HUN) Yellow cards:MEX - Javier Hernandez 77', Israel Castro 86' URU - Jorge Fucile 68'

The match started in a very open manner with both sides making their intentions clear from a goalscoring perspective.

Uruguay had a few early chances, one in particular being wasted by Luis Suarez in the 12th minute whilst Mexico were creating opportunities of their own down the other end.

Mexico were enjoying more of the possession but Uruguay were holding firm in defence and they then went forward in the 43rd minute and scored through Suarez who powerfully headed home from Edinson Cavani's first-time cross from the right flank.

There was plenty of energy and imagination from both sides in the early stages of the second half but it was Uruguay who made the first play when Diego Forlan whipped in a free-kick to his captain Diego Lugano but his powerful header was brilliantly saved by Mexican stopper Oscar Perez.

Mexico should have equalised in the 64th minute when substitute Pablo Barrera sent a pinpoint cross to Francisco Rodriguez who used a defender's finish and missed a header from pointblank range in what was a massive let-off for Uruguay.

El Tri were on top in the game but behind on the scoreboard and continued to push forward as they were unaware of the score in the France v South Africa game but it was proving difficult as the Uruguayans defended well and recorded their second win to top Group A on seven points with Mexico second on four but with a superior goal difference to South Africa.
