Thirteen football hooligans have been arrested by police for failing to comply with their banning orders, reports BBC Sport. The men, from Wirral and Liverpool, had all failed to sign a register at their local police station on the day of England's friendly with Japan.

As part of the orders, they must hand in their passports for the duration of the tournament in South Africa.

The arrests were part of a wider operation across Merseyside to prevent disorder at the World Cup.

The men, aged between 18 and 42, have been bailed to appear at court at a later date.

Pc Lee Lomax, who co-ordinated the operation, said: "Merseyside Police continually monitor all 'risk supporters' subject to banning orders.

"Any failure to comply with the conditions will be acted upon immediately.

"This is aimed to prevent disorder at the World Cup and reassure supporters travelling that those intending to cause trouble will be prevented from attending."
