Melbourne Victory desperate to re-sign Brebner

Two-time A-League champions Melbourne Victory are keen to re-sign midfielder Grant Brebner to a new contract.

The 33-year old Scottish-born Australian citizen has already been at the club for five seasons but head coach Ernie Merrick wants to secure him for at least one more year with the view for two if all goes well.

"We're working on re-signing Brebs for another year," Merrick said.

"He's only 33. I think he's got another two years in him."

The former Manchester United trainee and Hibernian and Dundee United has missed the Victory's past two matches because of injury - the elimination final loss to Gold Coast United and the opening Asian Champions League loss to Gamba Osaka - and Merrick confirmed it was his passion for the club which made his calf problem worse.

"Brebs has had a fantastic year and he's only out because he's injured," he added.

"We had a run of four games in 11 days and he was injured and willing to play on to get us into the finals.

"We had to take that risk to get into the finals and he was outstanding, but he's paying the price for that because he made the tear worse."
