McGowan important as Hearts defeat Millwall

Ryan McGowan played an important role for Scottish Premier League club Heart of Midlothian as they defeated English Championship outfit Millwall 3-2 at the New Den on the weekend.

The 20-year old Australian defender came on as a 34th minute substitute for injured Algeria international Ismael Bouzid and had a hand in the last goal which clinched the win for Hearts.

Eggert Jonsson put Hearts in front in the 12th minute before Millwall's Liam Trotter scored twice with a goal each side of half-time putting his side ahead but Hearts hit back through Craig Thomson who struck with a well-taken free-kick to tie the match at 2-2.

McGowan went agonisingly close to a winner but was denied by Millwall defender Tamika Mkandawire before he won a free-kick outside the area in which Thomson directly scored the winner from with another piece of dead ball brilliance.

McGowan looks to be close to cracking regular first team football at Tynecastle Stadium after spending last season on loan with Ayr United.
