Scott McDonald was on target for Middlesbrough on the opening day of the English Championship.

The former Celtic star scored with a headed simple tap-in in the 22nd minute only to see his goal cancelled out when Ipswich Town's New Zealand international Tommy Smith struck in the 50th minute.

After that, Boro crumbled, conceding goals to Tamas Priskin and Jonathan Stead to eventually go down 3-1 in what was a horror start for the Teessiders.

McDonald's Australian teammates Brad Jones and Rhys Williams were not in Gordon Strachan's squad for the season opener.
