McCoist: Liverpool captain Van Dijk not clever with statements

Rangers great Ally McCoist has taken aim at Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk over comments made about Manchester United.

After Sunday's 0-0 draw, Van Dijk slammed the lack of ambition shown by United.

But McCoist said on talkSPORT this morning: "It's his [Erik ten Hag's] job to go and get the best result possible for Manchester United and do it in a way he thinks he has the best opportunity to do that. If it means going defensively then it's not his problem.

"It's Liverpool's problem to break them down and I thought they'd win comfortably at the weekend. Erik ten Hag has got his team a point that I didn't think they'd get. Was it easy on the eye? By all accounts it wasn't, but would they rather go out and attack and get beaten or are they happier with the point?"

He added: "'I tell you what, Manchester United, come to Anfield and play to our strengths' - that isn't going to happen. I'm a little bit surprised. He's obviously frustrated but it's a naive comment to make.

"He's had a wee bite and I don't think it's the cleverest of statements."
