Steve McClaren is edging closer to becoming the new head coach at Newcastle United, according to Sky Sports. It is understand the 54-year-old former England and Derby County manager held talks with the St James' Park board earlier this week before going on holiday.

He is the favourite to take over from John Carver, who is likely to revert to his position as coach following talks with managing director Lee Charnley on Tuesday.
