McClaren: Liverpool defender Gomez best at fullback

Former England coach Steve McClaren admits he's a fan of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Gomez, who is currently away on international duty with England, has so far found his playing time limited at the Reds this season, with boss Jurgen Klopp preferring Joel Matip over the 22-year-old.

But McClaren, speaking to Sky Sports, has been impressed with the youngster ever since watching him play for Charlton Athletic.

He said: “Again, a modern-day centre-back. I remember seeing him at Charlton when he was playing right-back. Wow! He could defend. One-on-one he never got beat.

“I always saw him as a right-back, but [Jurgen] Klopp's tried him at centre-back. Purely for the fact that the way Liverpool want to play and how England want to play also.

“On the front foot, in your opponents half, so you have to defend on the halfway line. Gomez is quick and he is intelligent. And he would be able to recover if he were to get exposed."
