The shirt Diego Maradona wore when he scored with his hand for Argentina against England in the World Cup has sold for a record amount.

Maradona's strike in that game, which took his side through to the semi-final and was dubbed the "Hand of God" made him a national hero and a villain in England.

After he passed away in November 2020, ex-England and Nottingham Forest midfielder Steve Hodge put it up for auction.

He had swapped shirts with Maradona after the game.

Auction house Sotheby confirmed the sale of the shirt for roughly £7.1 million.

"This is arguably the most coveted football shirt to ever come to auction, and so it is fitting that it now holds the auction record for any object of its kind," said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's head of streetwear and modern collectables.
