Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been the victim of credit card fraud.

The £120,000-a-week Manchester United defender discovered he was a victim when he tried to pay for fuel at a petrol station and his card was declined.

He called his bank Coutts, which demands a £1million deposit to open an account, and was told it was cancelled due to suspicious activity.

Ferdinand, 33, tweeted: "That embarrassing moment when ya Credit card gets DECLINED....epic fail!"

He had filled up near his £4million home in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, but the suspected fraud took place in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Ferdinand said: "A FRAUD tried to make a 'dodgy' transaction in Harrogate with my details so they cancelled the card! We're after U FRAUD!"

Witness Laura Thomas tweeted: "Awkward moment when the guy at the petrol station's card gets declined... and it's Rio Ferdinand."
