Man Utd Treble winner Sheringham: Irwin and I disagree about Greenwood

Manchester United Treble winner Teddy Sheringham has questioned whether Mason Greenwood can handle leading the line.

Sheringham, who spent three very successful years at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, certainly knew how to find the back of the net and he admitted that he thought Greenwood was a centre-forward, but that he's still got to develop to excel in that role.

"I saw Denis Irwin in Dubai and I spoke to him about Greenwood," Sheringham told the Manchester Evening News via 978bet.

"I said I thought that's where Greenwood was going to be heading [playing at centre-forward]. He said to me 'no he's more of a number 10'. Again, he's scored his goals throughout his United career, youth career, but Denis thinks he's more of a number 10.

"I thought he was developing as a number nine and you know, United were planning on keeping him there for the long run, learning off Cavan. Denis sees it a little bit differently and he sees Greenwood more often than I do.

"He [Greenwood] definitely knows where the goal is. I love the way he finishes, very, very clever. Whether he gets in the six-yard box enough for a centre-forward, I don't know. He scores good goals rather than a lot of goals more often than not, I think.

"If he's going to learn, if he's going to be a number nine, then he needs to get in the six-yard box a little bit more often."
