Man Utd's Rooney uses injury picture to defend England withdrawal

Wayne Rooney has defended his decision to withdraw from the England squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The 27-year old forward missed Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday after he was involved in a training mishap with teammate Phil Jones.

Rooney was left with a massive gash on his forehead which has also forced him out of the qualifiers against Moldova at Wembley on Friday and Ukraine in Kiev on Tuesday.

England supporters have criticised Rooney for the move but he took to Facebook, posting a picture which helps explain the reason for his absence.

"Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad and the fact I had to pull out of the 2 games," he wrote.

"There's nothing I would like more than to be helping the lads in the qualifiers. I'm sure people will see from these images the reason why I won't be able to play."
