Man Utd legend Neville: RvP-Rooney can be greatest ever partnership

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes the Robin van Persie - Wayne Rooney strike-partnership can be one of the best in the club's history.

Neville wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "A United No 10 is always a forward dropping back in - like Yorke, Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney - rather than a midfielder moving up. In an era when you can barely name a traditional strike partnership, Robin van Persie and Rooney have an opportunity to take us back in time and become a genuine front two.

"They both have incredible records. Rooney has scored or assisted in 40 of his last 45 Premier League games. Van Persie has scored 104 goals for United and Arsenal in the past three seasons. It seems David Moyes is giving these two their heads and playing them both. In the next few months there is an opportunity to develop an incredible relationship.

"In Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, United have the two most potent forwards in the League in recent years. If they can bond together it will not only be better for the team, they will become greater players. Then they will be mentioned in the folklore of great striking partnerships that have won titles: Keegan and Toshack, Dalglish and Rush, Gray and Sharp, Hughes and Cantona, Shearer and Sutton, Yorke and Cole, Bergkamp and Henry."
