Man Utd legend Charlton frustrated watching England at World Cup

Manchester United Sir Bobby Charlton admits he was frustrated by England's performance in their draw with Algeria.

In his column for the Mail on Sunday, Charlton wrote: "I have never seen world-class players give the ball away as much as in this game.

"They didn't seem to be able to pass the ball accurately even over short distances.

"They just looked a jaded side, woefully short of ideas.

"What went wrong? Questions have been asked about our mental approach; are the players unable to cope with the pressure of playing in the World Cup? But maybe it's more of a physical problem. Is the training right? Are they getting the right preparation? Are they working too hard on the training pitch?

"I looked at great players like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard struggling to do the basics right.

"I looked at Wayne Rooney, who is an explosive, spontaneous player, unable to impose himself with any authority on opposing defenders who should not have been able to see which way he went.

"Rooney vented his frustration by criticising supporters who booed the team. That was not the right thing to do and he probably recognised that in the cold light of the morning after.

"These fans have travelled halfway round the world at enormous cost.

"That gave them the right to voice their opinion about what was one of the poorest performances of the World Cup so far."
